The Region

Bordeneuve is located in the Ariège department of France – commonly known as the 09. The village of Betchat is 70km south of Toulouse and about the same from the Spanish border. The Atlantic and Mediterranean are both a 3-hour drive away.

For an in-depth look at the region please see Nadia Jordan’s excellent Foothills of France page.

In the immediate vicinity, we have:

Betchat – the very sleepy village of Betchat is about 3km from the house. Betchat boasts  a post office and( goodnews!!) the little village  restaurant has reopened!  The hilltop church offers splendid views of the whole Pyrenean chain and the surrounding countryside.

Salies du Salat – a small, picturesque spa town of 2,000 people,  6km from Betchat (a 12-minute drive or a half-hour bike ride) that has nearly all amenities. Butchers, bakers, cafés, restaurants, banks and two supermarkets are in town, plus a big weekly market. Salies is also home to a golf driving range, a trout-fishing lake and a casino.

St. Girons – the hub of our little region, is 25km from Betchat and is home to a fabulous Saturday farmers market as well as numerous shops, boutiques, restaurants and just about anything else you could need. The town is a major portal into the Pyrenees and many of its high mountain villages, trailheads and lakes.

Toulouse – the fourth largest city in France, is an hour train-ride or car drive. Home to excellent museums, orchestras, and restaurants, the city is a culturally rich resource with beautiful architecture. We are very happy to drop our/pick up our residents at the train station if you wish to spend a day exploring this lovely city.
